Please join LACMA curator Britt Salvesen and artist Daniel Canogar for a conversation at INTERREALITY in The Desmond Tower. 

Britt Salvesen joined LACMA in October 2009 as curator and head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department and the Prints and Drawings Department. Previously, she was director and chief curator at the Center for Creative Photography (CCP), University of Arizona. Prior to joining CCP, Salvesen was associate curator of prints, drawings, and photographs at the Milwaukee Art Museum and associate editor of scholarly publications at the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art and her PhD from the University of Chicago.

Born in Madrid (1964) to an American mother and Spanish father, Daniel Canogar’s life and career have bridged between Spain and the U.S. Photography was his earliest medium of choice, receiving a M.A. from NYU at the International Center of Photography in 1990. He soon became interested in the possibilities of the projected image and installation art. He has created permanent public art installations with LED screens, including Brushstrokes, a permanent LED screen artwork for the new DeKa Bank headquarters' lobby (Frankfurt, 2022), among others. He has also created public monumental artworks in different media such as Oculus, a generative animation featured on Novartis Pavillon zero-media façade (Basel, Switzerland, 2022), among others. He has exhibited extensively in major museums and galleries across the world, including Reina Sofia Art Museum, Madrid; Palacio de Velázquez, Madrid, etc.

Please join artists Gretchen Andrew and Siebren Versteeg and their partners at MATRLabs and ARSNL for a unique public program that transcends the gallery walls and transports you directly into remote studio spaces with MATRLabs, home to some of the world’s most advanced machines for making digital dreams physical reality. Blur the lines between physical and digital as you watch Gretchen’s robotic face-tuning portraits firsthand while she discusses how the new series enters the world in simultaneous digital and physical form through the key partnerships of MATRLabs and ARSNL. Meanwhile Siebren Versteeg will take individual requests from attendees and manipulate his algorithms that scrape the internet for images to produce painterly collages that are erotic, prophetic, sometimes terrifying, often humorous and always revelatory. 


Frieze Week VIP Party: INTERREALITY x ARSNL ART x On Approval, 7:00 - 10:00 PM

INTERREALITY debuts its programming during Frieze Los Angeles with a VIP party in partnership with ARSNL and On Approval on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, 7-10 PM. INTERREALITY is pleased to welcome guests for complimentary drinks, music, a showcase of work by Nadya Tolokonnikova, creator of Pussy Riot, and live art performances by Millie Brown and Preston Douglas to kick off Frieze Week. Millie Brown, known for performances that test the limits of the artist’s body, will launch her new video on NOWNESS during Frieze week and perform a portion of the piece incorporating fire for INTERREALITY’s VIP guests. Preston Douglas will present an excerpt from his performance piece REPURPOSED RELIGION, a multidisciplinary performance art work combining dance, sound, and fashion.

INTERREALITY curator Mieke Marple gives a walkthrough of the expansive exhibition that bridges the traditional and digital art worlds through the presentation of works that span the physical-to-digital spectrum, produced by bitforms gallery and Wienholt Projects. Mieke Marple is an artist and writer who has exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb and MOCA Westport. She has been written about by The New York Times, W Magazine, The Guardian, Fortune, Vice, Elle, and Autre, among other publications.

Conversation with Pussy Riot's creator Nadya Tolokonnikova, discussing her GOD SAVE ABORTION video with author Sarah Thornton, 1:00 pm 

GOD SAVE ABORTION is an art film based on a protest for reproductive rights at Indiana’s Supreme Court on November 14, 2023, in collaboration with students from Indiana University. Nadya Tolokonnikova is a conceptual performance artist and creator of Pussy Riot, a global feminist protest art movement. She has exhibited at MoMA PS1, Palais de Tokyo, Saatchi Gallery, Louisiana Museum in Denmark, and Dallas Contemporary, among other institutions. Sarah Thornton is a sociologist and the author of the international bestseller Seven Days in the Art World. She was a scholar-in-residence at University of California, Berkeley for three years while writing her forthcoming book Tits Up: What Sex Workers, Milk Bankers, Plastic Surgeons, Bra Designers, and Witches Tell Us about Breasts. Tits Up will be published by WW Norton on May 7, 2024.
